Mining is a significant force in Saskatchewan's Economy, and a major driver of the environmental industry. Knowing about the most innovative methods will put you at the front of the competitive pack!

The common view of satellite imagery is Google Earth but every day, satellites are mapping different properties of the earth.  For example, there are daily EO-based measurements of global surface temperature, net primary productivity, and soil moisture to name a few.  There is daily coverage of every (land) point on the earth at 5 m, and at least one commercial high resolution satellites can image any point on the earth, every day.  The next generation of commercial satellites will have spatial resolution in the 0.25 cm range.  Data overload is more of a problem now than data availability.

In addition to working for Western Heritage, Carmen Finnigan is currently in the graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan.  She has nearly a decade of experience in applying EO data to environmental management, for mining and forestry applications.  She has delivered workshops to international audiences on statistical approaches for analyzing EO data.  She will be presenting on New approaches to EO data sources, or mining EO data for sustainable mining.
